Courchevel Ski School Guide 2025-2026: ESF Prices, How to Book & Which Instructor to Choose

ESF private lessons from €650/day. Group lessons from €383/week. How to book a ski instructor in Courchevel — internet, concierge or local contact. Honest guide to ESF vs independent schools, with 2025-2026 prices, children's programmes and Garderie Piou-Piou.

Courchevel has roughly 800 ski instructors operating at peak season. That abundance is exceptional — and it can feel overwhelming if you don't know where to start. This guide covers everything: how to book, which school suits your situation, what you'll pay, and what to do with children of any age.

How to Book a Ski Instructor in Courchevel

There are three real ways to find a reliable instructor here — and they are not equally effective.

01

Book direct online

Go to the school's website — ESF, New Generation, Label Courchevel — and book through their platform. Confirmed availability, clear pricing, paper trail. The limitation: you choose from what's still available, not from what's best.

02

Through your chalet concierge — the strongest lever

A good concierge has built ongoing relationships with instructors over years. Instructors who prioritise their clients, who they have seen perform under pressure. That gives you access to people who are not publicly available — and a level of vetting you cannot replicate alone. At courchevel.rentals, ski lesson coordination is part of what we handle alongside transfers and equipment hire.

03

A local recommendation

If you know someone in Courchevel — a chalet manager, a regular at the resort — a personal recommendation is the most reassuring option. These instructors have skied with the same families for fifteen years. They do not need a website.

The ESF — École du Ski Français

The ESF is the institution most people think of first. Founded in 1947, it is the flagship of French ski instruction. In Courchevel alone, three separate ESF schools operate across the resort:

ESF Courchevel 1850

Flagship school

  • • ~500 instructors at peak
  • • Meeting point: La Croisette
  • • Full range of programmes

ESF Courchevel Moriond

Family-focused

  • • Best children's nursery area
  • • Close to Aquamotion
  • • Quieter slopes for beginners

ESF Courchevel Village

Village 1550

  • • Intimate atmosphere
  • • Good for beginners
  • • Less crowded pistes

Why French Instructors Are Different

Every instructor operating in France — ESF or independent — must hold the Brevet d'État, a national professional qualification administered by the ENSA (École Nationale de Ski et d'Alpinisme) in Chamonix. This is a multi-year programme covering both technical skiing and pedagogy. The bar is genuinely high.

This matters when comparing across borders. Italian instructors, for instance, complete a shorter one-year training. The result is a step below French qualification in both teaching methodology and technical depth. If you are in France, you are working with French-trained instructors — one of the strongest guarantees in alpine instruction anywhere in Europe.

Independent Ski Schools

Every independent instructor in Courchevel holds the same Brevet d'État as the ESF. The qualification is identical. What differs is the philosophy: smaller teams, more personal service, and in most cases better English instruction.

ESF or Independent? The Honest Answer.

Choose ESF when…

  • • You want group lessons at a fair price
  • • Your children are in the Club Piou-Piou age range
  • • You're flexible on instructor and want maximum availability
  • • Budget is a real consideration

Choose independent when…

  • • You want the same instructor all week
  • • English instruction matters
  • • You expect the same service standard as your chalet
  • • You have children who need real attention, not a group of 8

The ESF is a machine — it works at scale and it has for decades. Most independent instructors started inside it and left to build something with a different philosophy. The technical training is the same (same ENSA Brevet d'État). What changes is the attention.

Travelling with Children: Garderie, First Lessons, and Private Instructors

From 18 months — Piou-Piou Garderie (ESF)

The Garderie is a full childcare facility — dedicated indoor space, qualified staff, magic carpets and snow play, lunch option available (+€30/day). Not ski lessons. From €226 / 5 days half day€361 / 5 days full day.

Ages 3–12: Club Piou-Piou or Private Instructor

Two approaches work for a child's first ski lessons.

The Club Piou-Piou is purpose-built for young children — dedicated area, structured badge progression (Ourson → 1st star → 2nd star → Fléchette), half or full day with lunch option. It takes the pressure off parents entirely. Full day for 5 lessons: €640.

A private instructor works one-on-one from the very first turn. Progression is faster, attention is total, and the instructor stays with the child the whole day — including activities beyond skiing if the child tires early (sledging, village walks). The private instructor is worth it for anxious children or when you want continuity across the full week.

One practical note: a private instructor is paid for the full day. They do not need to eat at your expense. Some families invite the instructor to lunch; others say "back in two hours." Neither is wrong. Be direct about it — good instructors prefer clarity.

The One Thing to Get Right: Book Early

The most expensive mistake in Courchevel ski lessons

During Christmas and February half-term, a private instructor who costs €650/day in low season can legitimately charge €1,000–€1,200/day. The best are fully booked months in advance. No amount of money creates availability that doesn't exist.

Book the moment your chalet is confirmed — not the week before you fly, not when you land. The same applies to ESF group lessons: February bookings close as early as 10 January.

Ski Lessons in Courchevel Moriond (1650)

Courchevel Moriond has its own ESF school and access to most independent instructors from 1850 (at a small premium to cover travel). The nursery slopes are excellent for beginners and the atmosphere is more relaxed. For families based in Moriond, the drop-off logistics are simpler and the children's areas are less crowded. Group lessons from approximately €46/day. The lift to 1850 takes 12 minutes, so stronger skiers in your group can head up while beginners stay on the lower slopes.

Group lessons suit social learners and those on a budget — they represent excellent value regardless of which school you choose. Private lessons accelerate progress significantly. For intermediate and advanced skiers looking to make a real step change in their technique, a private instructor is worth every euro. Families with mixed abilities often benefit most from private instruction.

For ESF group lessons, book as early as possible — during peak periods (Christmas, February half-term), demand is extremely high and groups fill fast. The ESF requires a minimum 5–6 consecutive days for private lessons during peak periods. For private instructors at independent schools, book 2–3 months ahead for Christmas and February — the best instructors are fully booked months in advance.

Yes. Specify when booking. British schools like New Generation guarantee native English speakers. The ESF has English-speaking instructors available, but you should request this specifically. Schools like First Tracks offer instruction in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Mandarin.

Schools assess ability at your first lesson. Be honest about your experience — choosing the wrong group wastes time for everyone. When in doubt, choose the lower level and move up if it's too easy.

Absolutely. Even experienced skiers benefit from technique refinement. A skilled instructor who knows the mountain intimately can transform your skiing in just a few hours on the right terrain.

The ESF is the national institution with the largest infrastructure and comprehensive children's programmes. Independent schools typically offer smaller groups, more personalised service, and often better English instruction. Premium independent schools focus on private lessons with a luxury experience.

The ESF has the most comprehensive children's programme with dedicated village areas (Club Piou Piou for ages 18 months+) and structured badge programmes. For English-speaking families wanting smaller groups, New Generation and Supreme are excellent choices.
